An Overview of Chinese Pulse Diagnosis

Chinese pulse diagnosis has been one of the foundations of diagnosis in Chinese medicine for many thousands of years. Pulse diagnosis is an incredibly intricate and complex system that takes many years to master. Pulse theory suggests that the health of the internal organs can be assessed by palpating the radial artery on the wrist. Each position corresponds to a different organ in the body. At each position, there are 3 depths that are pressed in order to assess the health of the Qi, blood and organ systems. In this way, the pulse can be viewed as a mirror of the internal organs.

There are approximately 60 basic pulse qualities that can be distinguished. Each pulse quality can have a physical or emotional association. Therefore, I can often assess one's degree of both physical and mental balance simply by feeling the radial pulses. I can usually tell if someone has a history of chronic depression or anxiety, anger, sadness, and so on. I can also determine how well the major organs of the body are functioning along with their repsective systems (endocrine, nervous, cardiovascular, etc.)

When a patient comes in for an initial visit, I will typically determine the degree of stability on the pusle as the first treatment priority. If the pulse is irregular, choppy, or changing qualities, this needs to be stabilized in order to set a deep foundation for successful treatment. Usually when the pulse is more balanced, the patient will likewise feel more centered, energetic, and healthy.

I was trained in the tradition of Dr. Shen and Leon Hammer, MD. Lonny Jarrett, whom I studied with from 2001-2004, is one of the senior teachers of this lineage of pulse diagnosis.
